What next after the horrific tragedy in Connecticut?
The U.S. Bishops through three of their standing committees recently issued a response for action.
Besides expressing profound solidarity with and prayers for the families, friends, neighbors and communities whose "hearts were rent by the loss of a child or a loved one," the bishops address the need for healthcare policies that provide support for people with mental health needs. They also call upon the entertainment industry to address the proliferation of violence and its impact on society.
The bishops also call for measures to support control of the sale and use of firearms, sensible regulations of handguns, as well as legislative efforts that protect society from the violence associated with easy access to deadly weapons including assault weapons.
With the celebration of the arrival of the Prince of Peace, may all People of Good Will help bring about a culture of life and peace.
