It was amazing. The Diocese of Rochester had asked all priests  to be available in their respective churches to offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Tuesday, March 26, during Holy Week. This Rite celebrates an encounter with a merciful God who joyfully welcomes back the sinner and lavishes mercy on the contrite heart. This Sacrament, for various reasons, has diminshed in numbers the last several years. Pastoral staffs wondered: would anyone come? Did they ever! From 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. two and at times three priests here at the Cathedral were busy praying with many penitents - some of whom had been away from the sacrament or from the Church for many years.  This was the same experience from church to church. It was indeed a powerful experience - both for the celebrants and the individuals who came. Why so many that day? No one knows for sure. Perhaps good promotion? Perhaps a new Pope who has been very appealing to many? Perhaps because it was Holy Week? Or perhaps it was just God's good grace....
